Dentistry Student Internship: regulation and responsibilities

Share:

University students must observe the Federal Council of Dentistry (FCD) rules during the internship period. We know that practice is fundamental for anyone who wants to practice the profession of dental surgeon. Therefore, it is part of the FCD's concerns that the student of the Dentistry courses has the correct access to the internship with the higher education institutions, while working for the Brazilian citizen. "The FCD wants to assure the student a correct and safe internship, as well as a quality service to society," says FCD President Ailton Morilhas.

Updated in July 2012, FCD Resolution - 63/2005 consolidates the regulation standards and internship responsibilities of its future professionals. In his articles, the work of a dental student is lawful, provided that he obeys the teaching legislation and, as a trainee, when fully observing the provisions of the law, otherwise, this activity may constitute illegal exercise of dentistry, and dental surgeons who allowing or tolerating such situations will be liable to ethical implications.

According to the FCD rules, dental students' curricular internships are the sole and exclusive competence of undergraduate educational institutions, which are responsible for regulating and disposing of: the insertion of the curricular internship in the didactic-pedagogical program; the workload, duration and journey of the curricular internship, which may not be less than one semester; the indispensable conditions for characterization and definition of the fields of curricular internships referred to in the law; and the systematic of organization, orientation, supervision and evaluation of the curricular internship.

How and when the internship should occur

Concerned with society and professionals, the FCD determines that the internship should be carried out in units that are able to provide practical experience in the line of education, and for this purpose the student should be able to train. For this, the completion of the curricular internship, by the student, will not entail any employment relationship. The internship activity day, to be fulfilled by the student, should be compatible with his / her school hours, as well as of the part in which the internship occurs. It will only be able to train the student who is fit and at least regularly attending the fifth semester of the Dentistry course. The delegation of tasks to the trainee will only be valid through the person responsible for the internship before the educational institution.

Regulation and Responsibilities

For the purpose of controlling and supervising the professional practice with reference to dental interns, educational institutions shall communicate to the Regional Council of the jurisdiction the names of the students able to train in accordance with these norms. Educational institutions should also communicate to the Regional Council the places of internships agreed. At the request of the interested party, the Regional Council, without charge, will provide a trainee identification document, renewable annually, which will only be valid for internship, in accordance with these rules, and in places that have an agreement with the educational institutions. The template for this document will be standardized by the FCD. If in doubt, contact your local Regional Dental Council (RDC).
