October 25: Brazilian Dentist and Dental Health Day
On October 25, 1884, Decree 9,311, responsible for expanding higher education courses related to health, was signed by the then Senator of the Empire, Minister and Secretary of State for Business of the Empire, Mr. Filippe Franco de Sá. With the signing of this decree, the first undergraduate courses in dentistry in Brazil were created. The pioneering universities offering this degree were located in Rio de Janeiro and Bahia. The Regional Council of Dentistry took advantage of the date and issued a decree making it the Day of the Brazilian Dentist.
In this same sense, it is also worth remembering Santa Apolônia, the patron saint of dentists. Apolónia de Alexandria was part of a group of virgin martyrs who suffered in Alexandria, Egypt, during a local uprising against Christianity before Decius' persecution. According to the legend, during his torture, while imprisoned, Apolônia had all her teeth violently pulled out or broken until her death. Her connection with dentistry is due to this reason, which made her popularly known as the patron saint of dentists and those who suffer from toothache.
DENTFLEX takes the opportunity to thank and wish a happy Dentist Day to those who are the reason for the existence of our company. Congratulations and thank you very much!!!
